Rountree Ensemble to feature the virtuosity of its musicians
PLATTEVILLE - Rountree Ensemble, University of Wisconsin-Platteville's chamber music ensemble-in-residence, will perform the third concert of its 2006-2007 season on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. This concert will be held in the Richard and Helen Brodbeck Concert Hall at UW-Platteville's Center for the Arts, located on West Main Street on campus. This program is made possible through the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Foundation and by the Dorthea Wilgus Pickard Fund.
The program for this concert highlights the virtuosity of several Rountree Ensemble members, who will perform as soloists or in pairs.
Pianist Eugene Alcalay, UWP faculty member and Rountree Ensemble member, will perform Franz Schubert's "Wanderer Fantasy." Professor Alcalay has recently been given the distinction of becoming a Steinway Artist, joining a select international group of pianists chosen to represent Steinway and Sons.
Trumpeter professor David Cooper will join Alacalay in Enescu's "Légende" for trumpet and piano. Soprano Rebekah Demaree, also a part of UWP's music faculty, will join Rountree Enslemble's clarinetist, John Marco, in four songs by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Marco will play the virtuoso "Sonatina" for solo clarinet by the Hungarian-American composer Miklos Rosza, who is best known for his scores for many Hollywood movies. Professors Marco and Alcalay will conclude the concert with Johannes Brahms' "Sonata in E flat, Opus 120" for clarinet and piano.
Rountree Ensemble's next concert at UW-Platteville will be on Tuesday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. Featured will be works by Villa-Lobos, Bohuslav Martinu and a new piece written for Rountree Ensemble by Mark Piszczek.
Tickets for the Feb. 28 concert are for sale at the University Box Office, located in the lobby of the Center for the Arts. General admission is $10, while senior citizens and UWP students are $4. The University Box Office may be reached at (608) 342-1298.
