Dancers create illusions at UWP
PLATTEVILLE- The next event in the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Center for the Arts Performing Arts Series will be a performance by dance company Momix on Feb. 21. The performance will begin at 8 p.m. in the Richard and Helen Brodbeck Concert Hall in the Center for the Arts building on campus.
Though they have recently garnered fame in a national commercial for Hanes, Momix is also known internationally for presenting work of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty. Momix is a company of dancer-illusionists who, under the direction of Moses Pendleton, have been celebrated for 20 years for their ability to conjure up a world of surrealistic images using props, light, shadow, humor and the human body.
In addition to stage performances worldwide, the company has frequently worked on special projects in film and television. Momix has made five Italian RAI television feature broadcasts to 55 countries (including the USSR and China) and has performed on Antenne II in France. Momix was also featured in PBS's "Dance in America" series. The company participated in the "Homage a Picasso" in Paris and was selected to represent the U.S. at the European Cultural Center at Delphi. Momix has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Spain, Greece, Italy, France, Germany, Russia, Denmark, England, Austria, Ireland, Holland, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Australia. The company is based in Washington, Conn.
In the work to be performed at UW-Platteville, Opus Cactus, tumbleweeds tumble, lizards leap and rattlesnakes slither when desert landscapes dance to life. The work is inspired by the giant saguaro cactus of the southwest.
