UWP to offer courses in laser technology, injection molding

Majid Tabrizi (left), professor of industrial studies, explains principles and applications of lasers to a University of Wisconsin-Platteville student. UWP is one of only 12 schools throughout the U.S. that has this laser technology capability.

PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Department of Industrial Studies will offer two evening courses during the spring 2007 semester. Both courses are open to the general public for auditing or regular enrollment.

Industrial Laser Application will be offered on Monday evenings, from 6 to 10 p.m. It features an investigation of principles and applications of lasers and laser systems as they pertain to manufacturing, service and communication industries. The use of lasers in industrial, medical and military applications will be discussed and emphasis will be given to industrial applications such as cutting, welding and heat treating UW-Platteville is one of only 12 schools throughout the U.S. which has this laser technology capability.

Another evening course, Injection Molding, will be offered on Tuesdays, from 6 to 10 p.m. This course is divided evenly between lab and lecture. The students will learn theoretical knowledge of injection molding, mold design, mold analysis, cost evaluation of an injection molded part and practical experiences running the presses. UW-Platteville is only one of two UW schools to offer injection molding training.

Majid Tabrizi, director for the Center for Plastics Processing, said these courses can be very valuable for employers. "Under an auditing situation, the cost can be as low as $3.53 per hour, which is a fraction of the cost of conventional training. It's a good way for non-traditional students to continue their education, and it is very cost-effective for employers," he explained.

The spring semester begins Jan. 22. Anyone interested in registering for either of these three credit courses may contact the registrar's office at (608) 342-1321. Anyone interested in learning more about these or other programs in the department of industrial studies may contact Dick Klawiter, chair, at (608) 342-1246. Anyone interested in learning more about the UWP Center for Plastics Processing Technology may contact Tabrizi at (608) 342-1115.
