LAE Faculty Forum Series presents 'The Art of Survival'

PLATTEVILLE - On Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 5-6:30 p.m. in 103 Doudna Hall, the College of Liberal Arts and Education (LAE) of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville will present the fifth lecture in their "Ideas for a New Century" Faculty Forum Series, "The Art of Survival: An Overview of Polish Cinema." Stephanie Branson, humanities department chair, will present her research on the topic. Adam Stanley, history professor, will respond to Branson's presentation. The audience will be able to ask questions and make comments during the last half hour of the lecture.

In describing the event, Branson said, "Using four representative films, 'The Last Stage,' 'Canal,' 'Sex Mission' and 'With Fire and Sword,' I will provide a brief history of the rich but relatively unknown panoply of films coming out of Poland from World War II to the present. Overall, I wish to demonstrate that the Polish film industry has always faced special challenges, but the current challenge, commercialization of Polish film subsequent to the change in government from 1989 onwards, is perhaps the most dire."

The LAE Faculty Forum is a program instituted in fall 2004, and the February lecture will be the fifth of seven scheduled this academic year. The purpose of the forum is to allow faculty to present information in their research areas to university faculty, staff, students and community members.

This free event is open to UWP students, faculty and staff and to the public. Registration is not required. Refreshments will be served.
