UWP invites alumni as guest speakers

PLATTEVILLE - As the semester comes to a close, Nathan Torgerson and Vincent Klink, recipients of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville 2006 Outstanding Alumnus Awards, will be coming to speak on the UWP campus. Both talks will take place in Room 305 Boebel Hall.

On Dec. 14, Torgerson will be giving a seminar on brain and neural implants. His presentation, which will focus on the latest technology used in treating neurological disorders such as Parkinson's Disease, starts at 4 p.m.

Torgerson is a UWP alumus who graduated in 1992 with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. After graduating in 2002, he worked in the Medtronic neurological division, where he now works as a senior principal systems engineer.

On Friday, Dec. 15, Klink will be discussing the research he has been conducting on host-pathogen interactions between soybeans and the soybean cyst nematode. He'll also be addressing the technology used to study these interactions, including microarray analyses, laser capture microdissection and bioinformatics. The talk will begin at 4 p.m.

A UWP alumnus, Klink earned an undergraduate degree in biology in 1993. He went on to the University of New Hampshire for graduate work, where he gained a degree in plant biology. At the University of Maryland, he completed his Ph.D. work in cell biology and molecular genetics. Currently, Klink works as a molecular biologist for the soybean genomics and improvement laboratory in the United States Department of Agriculture of Maryland.
