Marrett to speak at UWP commencement
PLATTEVILLE -- Dr. Cora Marrett will serve as the principal speaker at the 177th commencement ceremony at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. She currently serves as the UW System senior vice-president for Academic Affairs and advises and provides leadership to the Board of Regents, the president of the UW System and UW institutions of higher learning.
Prior to her appointment with the UW System, Marrett served as senior vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and provost at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, the 23,000-student flagship of the five-campus University of Massachusetts System.
Marrett was a member of the UW-Madison faculty from 1974-1997 with appointments in both sociology and Afro-American studies. She served as associate chairperson of the department of sociology from 1988-1991 and was affiliated with the Energy Analysis and Policy Program and the Wisconsin Center for Education Research.
Before working at UW-Madison, she served as an assistant professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina and an assistant/associate professor of sociology at Western Michigan University.
Marrett received her undergraduate degree from Virginia Union University in 1963 and her master's and doctoral degrees in 1965 and 1968 respectively from UW-Madison in sociology.
She was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1998 and the American Association of the Advancement of Science in 1996. In 2005, Marrett received the Erich Bloch Distinguished Service Award from the Quality Education for Minorities Network, given annually to an individual who has made singular contributions to the advancement of science and to the participation of groups underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Marrett has recently been named assistant director of Education and Human Resources at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va., a role she will assume in 2007.
Over 400 students from UWP will graduate on Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. during the ceremony held in Williams Fieldhouse on the UWP campus. No tickets are required for the commencement ceremony but seating is available on a first come first served basis.
