Korth to give UWP valedictorian address

PLATTEVILLE -- Rachel Korth will graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. She will also graduate with the prestigious honor of giving the senior valedictorian address during the 177th commencement ceremony to be held Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. in Williams Fieldhouse on the UWP campus.
Korth is a native or Northwestern Illinois and a graduate of Stockton High School. She chose UWP based on the academic reputation of the engineering programs as well as the opportunity she would have to compete as a collegiate athlete in basketball.
"From the moment I arrived on campus as a freshman, the UWP community has been nothing but welcoming and encouraging to me. This has become a second home, a second family," said Korth.
Like thousands of students before her, Korth notes that one of the greatest attributes of UWP is a truly dedicated faculty and staff who put forth extra time and energy to challenge students to do and be their best.
While at UWP, Korth has excelled is academics and is graduating summa cum laude. She is a member of Pi Tau Sigma, a mechanical engineering honor society, and Tau Beta Pi, an all-engineering honor society. Korth completed an internship at Caterpillar and has worked as a student tutor for calculus, physics and various engineering courses.
Aside from demonstrating outstanding academic excellence, Korth also shines on the court as a four-time varsity letter winner in basketball where she served as the 2005-2006 Lady Pioneers team captain. She was named to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Scholastic Honor Roll twice and represented the UWP women's basketball team for three years during National Student Athlete Day. Korth also served two terms on the Pioneer Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Lynn Schlager, Korth's academic mentor and a professor in the mechanical engineering department noted, "Rachel's dedication, work ethic and exceptional organizational and time management skills are evident. Additionally, she displays integrity, empathy, poise, leadership, teamwork and reliability ... personal qualities essential to pursuit of a successful life."
Korth is the daughter of Terry and Pete Korth of Stockton, Ill. Upon graduation, she will work for KJWW Engineering Consultants in Rock Island, Ill.
