UWP professor receives NASA Award

PLATTEVILLE - University of Wisconsin-Platteville general engineering professor, Osama Jadaan, is considered by students to be an integral part of the engineering program at UWP. "As a strong academic leader and role model for students, he values working with his colleagues and enjoys sharing his vast knowledge with others in the pursuit of higher education," said one of his previous students.
During the past few years, Jadaan worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, where he along with four of his peers, received a 2006 Tech Brief Innovation award for their project involving "Silicon Carbide MEMS Structures: Accounting for Uncertainties in Strength."
"The award was given to myself, a professor from Johns Hopkins University and three other NASA employees for our development of theory and code related to probabilistic design of MEMS devices," said Jadaan.
MEMS is the technical acronym for Micro Electro Mechanical Systems. UWP is in the process of establishing a MEMS and Nanotechnology program which held its first class during the spring 2006 semester.
Commented Jadaan, "This research ties directly to UWP because of the impact it will have on our MEMS program. The material we've developed at NASA will trickle down to students via new courses and international connections with the Fraunhofer Institut Werkstoffmechanik in Germany. It's a great honor to receive an award from NASA and was a huge collaborative effort between multiple institutions. I can only hope that the scientific and technical merits from this project will continue to help students at UWP learn about this rapidly developing area in science."
