Local high school and middle school students join in for UWP's percussion concert

PLATTEVILLE - One of the more unique events for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville campus is just around the corner: the annual percussion ensemble concert. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 8 in the Richard and Helen Brodbeck Concert Hall in the Center for the Arts building on campus. This concert is free and open to the public.

The UWP percussion students aren't the only ones who will be performing. UWP director of jazz and percussion, Joe Caploe, has invited percussion students from Platteville High School and Middle School to join them for the final number, "Afro Blue." "The younger students are really going to be blown away by what the UWP students can do," says Caploe. "So will the community. Nowhere else in Grant County will you get to hear something like this, it's really a unique experience." In addition to "Afro Blue," the UWP students will be playing pieces such as "Toccata," by Carlos Chavez. Another piece, "More like Chutney," is an Indian hand-drumming piece, while "Three Camps" mimics the traditional military drumming of the revolutionary period, when drums were used as tools of communication. "Parallel Dreams," a piece written by Caploe himself, will also be featured in the concert. Caploe adds that he enjoys including repertoire that he knows the audience will be drawn to. "And we have such a variety in our program: old school drumming, some classical literature that's quite difficult, hand drumming, original music, and more."
