International award-winning pianist to perform at UWP

PLATTEVILLE - On Monday, April 24, Alex Tuchman will be performing at University of Wisconsin-Platteville. This concert, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 2 p.m. in the Richard and Helen Brodbeck Concert Hall in the Center for the Arts building. Later in the day, UW-Platteville professor and pianist Eugene Alcalay will be joining Tuchman for an evening recital at First English Lutheran Church, located at the corner of Chestnut and Pine streets in Platteville. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. While this performance is also free and open to the public, donations will be welcomed for the UWP student scholarship fund. The suggested donation amount is $6 per person, with checks payable to the UWP Foundation.

Tuchman, age 13, is a native of Florham Park, N.J., where he began playing piano at the age of 6. By the time he was 11, Tuchman was already an accomplished musician, taking third place in the 2003 Bartok-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev International Piano Competition held at the University of Radford in Virginia. In September of 2005, he attended the Preparatory Division of the Mannes College of Music in New York City, where he now studies piano under Irina Edelman.

Tuchman's most recent achievement includes grand prize within his age division at the 2005 IBLA Grand International Music Competition, a prestigious contest held annually in Ragusa-Ibla, Italy. There, Tuchman was noted as one of the "Most Distinguished Musicians," and as a result, he is scheduled to perform at New York University and Carnegie Recital Hall prior to arriving in Platteville for his performance. The IBLA Foundation has also invited Alcalay to participate in the 2006 IBLA competition. Over the summer, he will be traveling to Italy to serve as an international jury member.
