Boy Scouts earn merit badges at UWP

PLATTEVILLE - On April 1, over 40 local Boy Scouts came to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville with hopes of earning several merit badges. Alpha Phi Omega's Tau Upsilon Chapter, located on the UWP campus, hosted a Mini-Merit Badge University for boy scouts located within Grant County, WI. Attending scouts were able to earn merit badges in electronics, chemistry, engineering and radio communications by attending several workshops taught by UWP students.

Along with the help of the Alchemist Club,Theta Tau radio station and Institute of Electrical Engineers, Alpha Phi Omega was able to host the event. Besides attending all of the workshops, Boy Scouts were required to write a paper about career opportunities in the different fields of the merit badges offered. Bob Menard, Alpha Phi Omega member, stated, "Alpha Phi Omega is founded on the principles of scouting. Many of our members were involved in Boy Scouts in the past and our organization wanted to do something to benefit the future of scouting." Alpha Phi Omega is a National Service Fraternity that promotes leadership, friendship and service to humanity. The Tau Upsilon chapter was founded in 1968 and later became inactive in 1993. In 2005, Tau Upsilon was rechartered and is now an extremely active chapter at UWP.
