Pioneer Farm moves forward with dairy center

PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneer Farm anticipates moving forward with facility renovation projects by hosting a groundbreaking for the new dairy center on Thursday, April 20. Located on the northwest side of the farm in the same location as the present feed center, the dairy center will be a facility equipped with the newest technology. It will be approximately 30,850 square feet and consist of a traditional milking parlor as well as two state of the art robotic milking machines, each which can milk up to 60 cows. The project will take approximately 10 months to complete and include traditional double-five herringbone milking parlors as well as the robotic milk machines.

UW System president, Kevin Reilly, will visit UWP on this day to mark the special occasion and participate in the event. A small social will begin at 12:15 p.m. with beverages, snacks and cookies in the lobby of the Agriculture Technology Center. The actual groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 12:45 p.m. Pioneer Farm provides experiences for students to evaluate management practices, conduct applied research, and communicate their education and research to agencies, producers and the public. It has been an integral part of UWP since the early 1900s but moved to its present location at 29200 College Farm Road in 1957. Totaling over 430 acres, the fields are rotated between corn, oats and alfalfa on the 325 tillable acres and livestock enterprises include dairy, beef and swine.
