UWP alumni are innovative at Modine
PLATTEVILLE - Alumni from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville have proven to be innovative at Modine Manufacturing Company, a worldwide leader in applied thermal management, based in Racine. At their 18th annual Patent Awards Banquet, the company recognized employees that have been awarded U.S. patents for their inventions at Modine, as well as those employees that submitted new ideas for patent consideration throughout the calendar year of 2004.
Of the 35 U.S. patents issued to Modine employees during 2004, 17 percent came from graduates of UWP. These 35 patents tie the record held at Modine for the most patents in one year, set back in 1932. In addition, out of the 50 ideas submitted for patent consideration, UWP alumni submitted 24 percent.
Founded in 1916 and with projected fiscal 2006 revenues from continuing operations of approximately $1.6 billion, Modine specializes in thermal management systems and components, bringing highly engineered heating and cooling technology and solutions to diversified global markets. Modine products are used in light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles, HVAC (heating, ventilating, air conditioning) equipment, industrial equipment, refrigeration systems, fuel cells, and electronics. The company has more than 8,200 employees at 35 facilities in 15 countries worldwide.
Jim Rulseh, group vice president at Modine, a '77 UWP graduate, said, "As you well know, I am a little biased about my feeling towards graduates from UWP, but the facts from this year's award banquet at Modine are difficult to deny. We at Modine are very fortunate to currently employ 28 UWP grads. They are some of our most innovative thinkers. Keep them coming."
Duane Ford, dean of the College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture, said, "My congratulations to those alums at Modine who have developed patentable technologies. It is always fun to see UW-Platteville graduates achieving success. I am happy for them and happy to see an additional bit of evidence attesting to the quality of our students and of our programs."
