UWP selected to host mock trial tournament

PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville has been selected as one of the venues for the 2006 Wisconsin High School Regional Mock Trial tournaments. The events are held throughout the year and are sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin Law-Related Education Program.
John Rink, UWP professor of social sciences, sought to bring the event to Platteville in order to reduce the risks and costs of travel for area high schools that want to participate in mock trial events. According to Rink, a primary reason UWP was chosen is because the Pioneer Student Center offers many meeting rooms in close proximity of each other, dining and other services all under one roof, and an excellent staff. The State Bar Association's coordinator for Law-Related Education, Dee Runaas, visited the campus during the summer, inspected the student center, and immediately approved it as a regional site.
Rink pointed out that the tournament will give many students an opportunity to visit the campus during the years when they are considering their college options.
"This event will enable the university to showcase our campus to approximately 80 of the best high school students in the region. It's a big win for everybody," he said.
Rink is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) and a tournament official for AMTA regional competitions. He has directed six intercollegiate mock trial tournaments on the UWP campus. He also coaches the UWP team, which has won 65 awards since 1996 in invitational, regional and national competitions.
The UWP-hosted tournament will take place in February 2006. Anyone interested in learning more about the event may contact Rink at (608) 342-1795.
