UWP prepares new online criminal justice course
PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville's Criminal Justice Department, in association with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, is in the process of developing a new non-credit course, Leadership in Police Organizations, to aid in the professional development of U.S. police officers. The course focuses on techniques for applying the scientific knowledge of human behavior to leadership situations in complex organizations.
The interactive online program will explore theories of leadership, human motivation, employee satisfaction, and peak performance as they relate to the achievement of organizational goals. Law enforcement officers completing the course will have a more complete knowledge of successful leadership techniques and will learn the skills necessary for effective individual, group and organizational leadership.
The new course was adapted for UWP from curriculum that is required study at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Dr. Howard T. Prince II (previous head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at West Point), John F. Halstead (LTC, USA, retired), and Larry M. Hesser (former chief of police in Georgetown, Texas) collaborated with the Wisconsin Department of Justice to ensure that the program is relevant to the current needs of the law enforcement profession.
Dr. Cheryl Banachowski-Fuller, director of UWP's online graduate criminal justice program, has been involved with this unique inter-agency partnership from the beginning and looks forward to creating more professional development courses. "It has been such a pleasure working with the folks at the Wisconsin Department of Justice," she notes, "especially Richard Thomas, management training consultant, Training and Standards Bureau. What a great opportunity this online training will provide for our hard-working law enforcement officers."
Leadership in Police Organizations will be available online in fall 2006. For further details, visitwww.uwplatt.edu/disted or contact Dr. Cheryl Banachowski-Fuller, director of UWP's online criminal justice program, at 608-342-1652 or at banachoc@uwplatt.edu.
