UWP welcomes students from the Nagasaki College of Foreign Languages

PLATTEVILLE - Ten students from the Nagasaki College of Foreign Languages arrived at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Feb. 12. They were accompanied by their professor, Norimitsu Fujiuchi. The students will be on campus until May 20 when they fly back to Japan. Their goal during their 14 weeks in Platteville is to improve their English skills, and particularly their skill in speaking English and listening to and understanding conversations.

UW-Platteville's relationship with the Nagasaki College of Foreign Languages dates to 1997 and the work of UWP's Dr. Charles Collins (deceased) and Mark Tiedemann, a Platteville native who resides in Japan and teaches at the school.

One of the things the students enjoy most during their stay in the United States is their American roommates and conversation partners. The Japanese students live in the residence halls and participate in specially designed and delivered English as a Second Lanugage coursework. The students are very interested in learning American idioms and about American youth culture. Some of their weekends are spent with host families from Platteville and the surrounding area. This adds another dimension to their stay as they experience American family life. Additionally, on Fridays the students are involved in experiential learning activities such as a visits to the State Capitol, local schools, area museums and historic sites.

UWP faculty and staff involved in the 2005 Nagasaki program include Marcia Sola, Patricia Jonas, Wendy Perkins, Todd Stradford, Mark Sethne, Catherine Huff, Rob Kerr and Loren Finn.
