UWP Career Center services now available to alumni
PLATTEVILLE - The average U.S. citizen may change jobs as many as seven times or more in a lifetime. At the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, the Career Center helps graduating seniors find their first job, and now services are being extended to alumni looking for that second, third or fourth.
Access to the same services offered to graduating students is now available to alumni for a fee. While the broadest range of service is available on site, UWP Career Center resources are available to alumni thousands of miles away.
"We have both remote service and the on-campus component," said Sharon Becker, director, UWP Career Center.
With the use of a computer, alumni can upload their resume and cover letter into a web database and search for available jobs through a number of online networks. Career consultants can even review resumes and offer advice through e-mail.
By visiting the UWP Career Center, located in the Ullsvik Center, alumni can physically meet with personal career consultants, attend on-campus job fairs, utilize resource books and materials, and take advantage of an on-site database with 12 million employer contacts.
"We have a lot of resources. It's a very comprehensive service," Becker said.
The service costs $60 for six months for UWP Alumni Association members, $100 for non-members. A limited access job-postings-only service is also available to UWP Alumni Association members for $30 for six months, $60 for non-members. Graduating seniors and graduate students purchasing a membership from the Alumni Association will receive one year of full service at no cost.
Alumni Career Services will benefit from a number of developments at the UWP Career Center as well. One program, UW-Platteville Connections, will help build bridges between the university and its alumni and friends. Individuals will be able to use a web database to become involved with the university-by speaking to classes, being involved with presentations to student organizations, providing co-op and internships opportunities, serving as a mentor or hosting company tours.
The recent development of the Wisconsin Jobs for Wisconsin Grads database will also benefit job seekers. All UW System schools have access to the site developed to help keep young professionals in the state. The system is designed to streamline the process by which employees publish job notices. "We're anticipating an increase in the number of alumni jobs posted. Just about all of the companies posting entry-level positions are also looking for experienced people," Becker said.
The Alumni Career Services program is a collaborative effort between the UWP Career Center and the Alumni Association, and is aided by a grant from the chancellor's Opportunity Fund.
"We are pleased to see our vision of career services for UWP alumni become a reality," said Ann Philip, director, UWP Alumni Services. "Our appreciation goes out to the UWP Alumni Association Board of Directors and Chancellor Markee for addressing this vital need by providing grants to help fund the program. Now, we will not only be helping our alumni in their career development, but this service will also assist in keeping them connected to their university."
