Pioneer Idol rocks UWP

PLATTEVILLE - The evening of March 12 was full of eventful surprises and hidden talent as six acts competed for the top prize in the University of Wisconsin-Platteville's very own Pioneer Idol. Hosted by Campus Programming and Relations event coordinators, Dan Jendrzewski and Stephanie Kerber, contestants were critiqued by esteemed judges Jeff Schoonover, Elton Williams, and Deb and John Putnam.

Students filled the Pioneer Crossing located in the lower level of the Pioneer Student Center to hear the performers showcase their talents. Tiahti Young won the first prize DVD/VCR with an original song he wrote and produced, "It's Been Awhile." Second prize went to Chellanie Adams who sang and played guitar to country hits, "Two More Bottles of Wine" by EmmyLou Harris and her personal rendition of "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash. A duet by Colleen Sonnentag and Mike Jacyna, nicknamed Shorties, took third place with their versions of "Wake Me up When September Ends" by Green Day and "Ordinary Day" by Vanessa Carlton.

Other ensembles included B4, an acapella singing group; Ben Ligocki on guitar and vocals; and vocalist Andrea Peck. The real show stopper came from Sayaka Hamagucci, a Nagasaki, Japan, exchange student, who performed a traditional Japanese song while the judges were tabulating the results. Hamagucci received a standing ovation from audience members.
