Alliant Energy lends support to UWP policy center with grant

PLATTEVILLE - The Center for Applied Public Policy at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville strives to provide information for civic leaders and policy-makers in the region and beyond.

The CAPP is entirely self-supported, and recently received a gift from the Alliant Energy Foundation that will help the group continue to publish its bi-monthly newsletter.

"This gift is greatly appreciated," said CAPP director Rosalyn Broussard. The purpose of the CAPP is to provide research and training facilities to UWP faculty, staff and students engaged in applied social research and public policy analysis, according to the center's mission statement. The program facilitates the exchange of information and expertise between the university's faculty, staff and students and the economic, political and civic entities within the state.

The CAPP has conducted economic impact studies of the Great Outdoor Games in Madison and of the expansion of the Southwest Health Center in Platteville, Broussard said. The bi-monthly newsletter includes objective analysis of local, state and national issues. The February 2005 newsletter, for example, provided information on the national social security system and on the possible impact of a larger Wal-Mart shopping facility in Platteville. Jeff Reynolds, key account manager for Alliant Energy, presented a $1,000 check to Broussard Feb. 25. The Clare Family Foundation also made a recent supporting contribution, according to the CAPP's February newsletter. Alliant Energy is headquartered in Madison. Through utility subsidiaries, such as Wisconsin Power and Light, the company provides service to 1.4 million customers in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois. The Alliant Energy Foundation has contributed $17 million to individuals and organizations through community grants, scholarships and matching gifts since its formation in 1998. Grants are awarded to support health and human services programs, education endeavors, civic activities, cultural and arts initiatives and environmental efforts. According to a foundation brochure, the organization awarded more than 300 grants totaling more than $450,000 in 2004.
