Athletic department to host 2005 National Women in Sports Day
PLATTEVILLE-January might find some kids in mid-winter doldrums, but the University of Wisconsin-Platteville athletic department is offering just the right combination of exercise and fun to help young girls in grades two to seven shake off the blues.
On January 22 young girls can attend the 2005 National Women in Sports Day and participate in a clinic to practice the fundamental skills of basketball, golf, track and field, soccer, softball, volleyball and cheerleading. The clinic will last from 1:45 to 4:00 p.m., and a dinner of pizza, fruit and pop will follow. Participants are also invited to attend the UWP women's and men's basketball games after dinner.
"This day is to honor the achievements of girls and women in sports. What a better way to do this than to have 250 girls at a sports clinic taught by UWP athletes. It is a great way to introduce young girls to many different sports with our athletes as role models. It is also a great teaching/learning experience for our women athletes as well," said Deb Schulman, assistant director of the UWP athletic department.
The cost of the event is $10 and includes a button or poster, T-shirt, dinner with the UWP athletes, clinic and basketball games. The registration deadline is Jan. 14 and pre-registration is encouraged, as this is a popular event. Registration after the deadline will be $15, and registration at the door will be allowed if space permits.
To register, pick up a form at Williams Fieldhouse or download a form at www.uwplatt.edu/athletics/news/ngwsd.pdf. Schulman can be contacted at (608) 342-1255 or 1567 for more information.
