John Barth passes away

John M. Barth, a teacher, coach, and athletic director at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville from 1947 to 1984, passed away Saturday, Oct. 16 in Oshkosh. He was 86.

Services will be Thursday at noon at Calvary Lutheran Church, 2580 W. 9th Ave, Oshkosh. Family and friends may call at the church Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will be Friday, Oct. 22 in the Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville, with grave-side services at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations directed to the John Barth Foundation.

The John Barth Foundation will donate money to the UW-Platteville Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium renovation, scheduled to begin after the 2004 football season is finished. Donations may be sent to the Barth Foundation at P.O. Box 329, Platteville, WI 53818.

Barth was a Madison native, graduating from East High School in 1936. He earned his undergraduate from Ripon College and his master's degree from UW-Madison. After teaching one year at Ripon High School and six at Portage High School, Barth joined UW-Platteville (then known as Platteville State Teachers College) in 1947 as head basketball coach plus assistant coach in football and track and faculty member in health and physical education.

In 1949, he became the director of health and physical education as well as director of athletics, positions he held until Jan. 1, 1982. He remained on staff to teach full-time until retiring altogether from the University in 1984.

During his tenure, Barth served as the head basketball coach, compiling more than 200 wins with six conference titles from 1946 to 1963. He served as head coach in football, basketball, track, golf and tennis during his years at UW-Platteville. Barth was inducted into the UW-Platteville Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith in 1988. He is survived by two sons, Terry (wife Pamela) and Tom (Kathryn), a daughter, Barbara (Gerald) Krueger, as well as five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a brother, Robert (Nancy).
