ASIA Club holds eighth annual event

PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Asian Students in Action (ASIA) Club will be sponsoring their eighth annual Asian American Night on Saturday, Oct. 2, in the Velzy Commons of the Ullsvik Center.

Asian American Night began in 1997 with a Filipino performance from Madison and an attendance of about 75 people, but continues to grow every year. The largest attendance was in 2002 when over 600 people came to see the Chinese Acrobats perform at the Center for the Arts. Commented Pusaporn Tabrizi, ASIA Club advisor, "This year we are expecting between 200-250 people to attend."

ASIA initially began holding a fall Asian American Night to expose UWP students, faculty, staff and the surrounding community to the variety of Asian cultures in the world. Dinner begins promptly at 7 p.m. with a menu featuring stir-fried noodles, stir-fried rice, crab rangoons, pork egg rolls, vegetable egg rolls, beef and broccoli, Asian chicken wings with sesame seeds, pot-stickers with dipping sauce, tapioca pudding, coconut macaroon, a seasonal fruit tray, apricot mist punch, and a coffee station.

The professional performances that accompany the evening have included a wide variety of groups. This year a traditional Korean performance group, known as SKY, will provide entertainment for the evening. The 11 performers from Chicago will begin with a selection entitled, "Samulnori," or "playing of four things." It combines traditional rhythmic movements derived from wandering tribes from history, with Shamanistic ceremonies and modern compositions. Together this creates a unique musical experience that is both ancient and contemporary. SKY will perform another piece entitled, "Nong-ak," which literally translates to "farm music." This piece includes traditional dancing and drumming. They will end their performance singing a Korean song.

Tickets cost $5 for an adult, $3 for students, or are free with a meal plan. Tickets are limited and available at the Multicultural Educational Resource Center in 129 Warner Hall, or by calling (608) 342-1555. Everyone is invited to attend.
