Four UWP faculty members step into new roles as department chairs
PLATTEVILLE - The budding academic year finds a host of freshmen and transfer students adjusting to a new environment. It's also a time of adjustment for the faculty as four University of Wisconsin-Platteville educators begin their tenures as department chairs.
Charles Cornett has been appointed chair of the Department of Chemistry and Engineering Physics in the College of Engineering, Math and Science (EMS), while Carmen Faymonville assumes the role of Department of Humanities chair in the College of Liberal Arts and Education (LAE). The College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture (BILSA) welcomes two new chairs: Dick Klawiter in the Department of Industrial Studies and Steve Kleisath in the Department of Business Administration and Accounting.
Cornett, who specializes in criminalistics, joined the UWP chemistry faculty in 2001.
"Dr. Cornett has demonstrated an energy and enthusiasm that will help the Department of Chemistry and Engineering Physics continue to expand and enhance its programs. Chuck is a person who is concerned about the students and will do everything possible to guarantee them the best education possible," said College of EMS Dean Richard Shultz.
As humanities chair, Faymonville will help lead a department that includes the English, philosophy and foreign language programs.
"Dr. Faymonville has already demonstrated her energy, leadership and ability to get things done in her previous position as director of the Women's Studies Program. I know she has the respect of her colleagues and will be an excellent representative of and advocate for the humanities at UWP," said College of LAE Dean Mittie Nimocks. Laura Wendorff has replaced Faymonville as director of the Women's Studies Program.
Klawiter brings 32 years of experience in higher education to his leadership post in the industrial studies department.
"For the past two years he has done an outstanding job as the assistant dean of the College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture. I know he will do an equally fine job in this new role as chair of the Department of Industrial Studies," College of BILSA Dean Duane Ford said.
Kleisath will lead a faculty of 17 professors and adjunct instructors in the business and accounting programs, which have 400 on-campus majors and an additional 550 students enrolled part-time through the distance education program.
"I am very pleased that Dr. Steve Kleisath has agreed to become the new chair of the Department of Business and Accounting. The challenges for Steve will be plenty, but I know that with his 24 years of experience he will be very able to meet these challenges and to provide strong leadership in his department," Ford said.
