Reading workshop draws 150 educators to UWP
Reading specialist Michael Ford, associate dean of the UW-Oshkosh College of Education and Human Services, helps elementary school educators from southwest Wisconsin learn more about instructional methods to teach reading to young children during a workshop at UW-Platteville Aug. 12.
PLATTEVILLE - A workshop at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Aug. 12 helped more than 150 school teachers from southwest Wisconsin and the surrounding area learn more about teaching reading to children.
The workshop was hosted by UWP in conjunction with the Hidden Valley Reading Council, part of the Wisconsin State Reading Association. Reading specialist Michael Ford, associate dean of the UW-Oshkosh College of Education and Human Services, delivered the keynote address, and was joined by UW-Oshkosh faculty member Patricia Scanlan in conducting the workshop.
Ford led instructors of grades K-2 in activities to help them "improve small group instruction for young kids." Scanlan emphasized the importance of reading aloud as she helped instructors of grades 3-5 in workshop exercises.
"Reading aloud helps to get a sense of the enjoyment of reading, the personal satisfaction," she said.
The group also welcomed Debra Zarling, president of the Wisconsin State Reading Association; Sharon Tilton, former WSRA president; and Thelma Ristow, WSRA International Reading Association coordinator.
Continuing education credits were offered for participation in the workshop. Among those in attendance were educators from the following school districts: Pecatonica, Darlington, River Ridge, Platteville, Shullsburg, Ithaca, North Crawford, Mineral Point, River Valley, Weston, Southwestern, Cassville, Richland, Iowa Grant, Lancaster, Seneca, Blackhawk, Dodgeville/Ridgeway, Riverdale, and St. Mary's of Platteville.
UWP School of Education professor Carol Lange said the reading workshop will continue annually at UWP.
