Pre-Veterinary Camp scheduled at UWP

PLATTEVILLE- On June 29 and 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Campus and Pioneer Farm, the School of Agriculture will offer a chance for high school students to observe and practice veterinary skills and technique at the Pre-Veterinary Camp conducted by various UWP professors and professionals from around the area.

There are several planned workshops for campers to attend. In the Veterinary Skills Workshop campers practice suturing and learn about vet school requirements and expectations under the instruction of Dr. Susan Price, UWP animal science professor.

The Reproductive Physiology Workshop gives campers a chance to perform an ultrasound and dissect a cow's reproductive tract under the direction of Michael Mee, a UWP animal science professor.

In the Animal Behavior and Handling Workshop students learn about normal and abnormal behavior and proper animal restraint. Alicia Prill-Adams, UWP animal science instructor and assistant farm manager, teaches this workshop. The chance to observe surgery and read x-rays is available in the Small Animal Workshop under the direction of local veterinarian Dr. Jackie Kieler. The Diagnostics Workshop allows campers to observe animals, perform a physical and make a diagnosis. This is under the direction of Price, and Cory Weigel, the UWP dairy herd manager.

There will also be several mini sessions involving blood collecting, vaccination, dehorning, nutrition, and more.

The camp is open to all students entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in the fall. Registration is limited to the first 60 paid applicants. The cost to attend for commuters is $150. Overnight accommodations are available at the farm's Living and Learning Center for $14 to $20.
