Outstanding student organizations receive awards

PLATTEVILLE - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville has over 150 recognized student organizations and clubs. Two of them were recognized at the annual Leadership Awards Ceremony held Friday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the Center for the Arts. The award that Alpha Phi Omega and the Hmong Club received was the UWP Alumni Association Oak Leaf Award for Outstanding Student Organization. The 2004 nominees were Alpha Phi Omega - National Service Fraternity, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Hmong Club, and National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH).

The Hmong Club's goal is to recruit and assist in the development of understanding for Hmong people socially and culturally. With over 40 members, the club continues to promote diversity. They provide numerous activities for the campus in order to achieve these goals. Some of the most popular events include the annual Hmong Club Thanksgiving Dinner and the annual Hmong Club Statewide Volleyball Tournament. The club has also participated in Hmong Panels for Ethnic and Gender Equity classes, Hmong film discussions, Boxes and Walls, and UWP intramural sports events.

Commented Pusaporn Tabrizi, Hmong Club advisor, "The Hmong Club members have highlighted their cultural richness and consequently promoted diversity for the UWP community through a myriad of organized and well attended events."

Alpha Phi Omega was founded nationally in 1925. New to UWP, it has flourished. Primarily focusing on three areas, leadership, friendship, and service, they have helped clean up the Rountree Prairie, volunteered at blood drives, held a faculty fashion show to raise money for charity, and coordinated numerous food drives.
