Mathematics dept banquet for scholarship winners

PLATTEVILLE- On Wednesday, April 28 in the Harry Nohr Art Gallery on the University of Wisconsin-Platteville campus, the mathematics department honored some of its best and brightest students. Starting at 6 p.m. attendees at the banquet participated in a social, dinner and an awards ceremony.

According to Cinda Furry, the administrative assistant for the math department, "The banquet offers an opportunity for our majors to make connections with emeriti professors, current faculty, and the people who originally endowed the scholarships."

The E.G. Harrell Scholarship was awarded to David Bell, Jesse Gleason, and Samantha Heyer. This scholarship, established by E.G. Harrell, long-time chair of the mathematics department, presently provides a scholarship to a junior or senior majoring in mathematics education. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement and high potential and interest in teaching and leadership.

Jeff Theusch received the George Bullis Scholarship for fall 2004. Ryan Greif and Koreena Wood are continuing recipients for fall 2004. The scholarship is given to an entering freshman majoring in mathematics or in an area requiring high mathematical aptitude, and provides for full tuition. It may be extended for up to four years.

The Kenneth Kundert Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Donald Eichman, Jenna Hoffman, and Bradley Samz for fall 2004. Established by the family of Kenneth Kundert, this scholarship is given to a junior or senior mathematics major with a GPA of at least 3.50, and high moral character.

Laurence Jackson was awarded the Otto Carothers Memorial Scholarship for fall 2004. Established by the family of Otto Carothers, this annual scholarship is given to a mathematics major or minor having completed 30 credits with an overall GPA of at least 3.0.

The Ohinwa Scholarship was awarded to Cynthia Freymiller for fall 2004. This scholarship, established by former mathematics department members Milton Mitchell and Jerry Ohm, is given to a sophomore or junior mathematics major, with preference given to a student from southwest Wisconsin exhibiting financial need.

Keegan Iverson and Kari Shairer were awarded the William and Jean Sanders Scholarships for fall 2004. William and Jean Sanders retired from the mathematics department in May 2000 after a combined 56 years of service to UW-Platteville. They established two scholarships for sophomore or junior mathematics majors as a way of sharing their love for mathematics and teaching.
