Women in Engineering hold Spring Career Day

PLATTEVILLE- Engineering is no longer a completely male-dominated career. Female students in grades eight through 12 will have an opportunity to explore engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Spring Career Day on Friday, April 11 from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The career day is an opportunity for young women to see engineering in action. It helps to educate young women on the careers in technical fields, especially engineering.

Throughout the day the young women will have the opportunity to sign up for an optional campus tour, eat lunch on campus, hear presentations from keynote speakers, and spend the day learning about different aspects of engineering.

Tammy Salmon-Stephans, director of women in engineering and organizer of the event, commented on the day saying, "Most young women have a perception [about engineering], but their perception is not accurate. The program helps to educate them on what engineering is and what types of jobs are available in engineering."

Salmon-Stephans feels there should be no doubt that the career day and all of its events will provide valuable encouragement and information for young women with interests in the engineering field.

Participants will meet in the Velzy Commons of the Ullsvik Center and are required to pre-register by calling Salmon-Stephans at (608) 342-1563 or by visiting http://www.uwplatt.edu/wep. There is a $10 application fee, which includes lunch and a t-shirt. Parents, teachers, counselors and other interested guests may attend at no cost.

For further information, please call (608) 324-1563.
