Criminal Justice Career Day is a success

PLATTEVILLE - Students had a chance to see what jobs and opportunities were available in law enforcement on March 9 during the 31st annual University of Wisconsin-Platteville Criminal Justice Career Day.

Seventy-seven agencies were represented at this year's event, ranging from representatives of the U.S. Secret Service and the FBI, to Six Flags and the Platteville Police Department.

Students from UW-Platteville, area high schools, and other educational institutions, as well as alumni and members of the community, had the opportunity to talk with representatives and learn about possible job opportunities in law enforcement.

Tim Berg, an alumnus of UWP and a member of the Onalaska Police Department, said, "This is one of the biggest and nicest career days that we attend. UWP has one of the best criminal justice programs and there is always a great student turnout."

Lori Sweeney of the Rockford, Ill. police department is new to recruiting new members, but her predecessor told her "Don't let go of UW-Platteville." She was very impressed with the turnout and said that it was a great opportunity to advertise and recruit new members.

People in attendance also had the opportunity to attend two distinguished speakers: Darrel Berglin, the sheriff of Richland County, and Dennis Enloe, a computer forensic/high-tech investigator and member of the Waukesha County District Attorney's Office. Both are UW-Platteville alumni.

The criminal justice career day is planned by UWP's criminal justice faculty and students involved in the Criminal Justice Association.

"Graduating seniors have a chance to find a possible job," said Robyn Fischer, criminal justice association professional/academic, "and other students can find out what will be available to them when they graduate."
