"Love Letters" on UWP stage
PLATTEVILLE - The production "Love Letters" will once again grace the University of Wisconsin-Platteville stage to raise money for speech and theater scholarships and development funds.
The play by A.R. Gurney traces the correspondence of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, a lawyer, and Melissa Gardner, an artist. Through their letters the characters are revealed from their political aspirations, love affairs, and military service, to artistic ambitions. The play first premiered on Nov. 3, 1988, and since then has been produced around the world, including Broadway.
Mittie Nimocks, UWP dean for the college of Liberal Arts and Education, plays the female character opposite Coleman, an actor and resident of Mineral Point. Coleman last performed in Platteville during Dec. 2002 when he appeared in the one man "Christmas Carol." Nimocks and Coleman have previously played a love interest opposite each other in the Heartland Festival's "The Foreigner." According to Nimocks, "The play is unique in that it's not memorized. It's set up as reading old love letters, so is even considered a reader's theater. It's a must see performance and one of my favorites."
"Love Letters" will be performed on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13 and 14 beginning at 8 p.m. in the theater of the Center for the Arts. Tickets cost $3 for students, $5 for faculty/staff, and $8 for the general public.
