Looking for host families for international students
PLATTEVILLE- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville will be the 'home' to 12 students (10 women and two men) from the Nagasaki College of Foreign Language, Nagasaki, Japan, from Feb. 14 through May 24. The students are enrolled in a two-year college program, in Nagasaki, to develop their English language skills.
The students live on the UWP campus, with American roommates and are enrolled in a 12-credit specially designed English as a Second Language program. They eat the majority of their meals through UWP food service, have conversation partners, and keep journals of their time in the USA.
The host family program is designed to give the students an opportunity to interact with an American family in an American home. Host families have generally:
- invited host-students to family dinners including birthday celebrations, holiday dinners, and other special events
- helped host-students with transportation for shopping (to local stores like WalMart, and to out of town locations like Dubuque or Madison)
- invited host-students to participate in 'special' activities
- accompanied host-students to local events like concerts and sports events as well as regional events
- helped acclimate host-students to the U.S. by offering lodging for the student's first night in country (this year - Saturday, Feb.14)
- assisted during spring break (when the residence halls are closed) by offering both lodging and meals (this year - approximately March 12 to March 21)
- assisted at the end of the school term (when the residence halls are closed) by offering lodging and meals (this year - approximately May 14-19)
