Feingold to speak at UWP

PLATTEVILLE- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Student Senate and social science department will host U.S. Senator Russ Feingold on Thursday, Feb. 19. He will be speaking in the Pioneer Haus located in the Pioneer Student Center at 5 p.m.

Feingold was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, after serving in the Wisconsin State Senate for 10 years. His visit is just one of many UW-campus stops scheduled during his 2004 re-election campaign.

According to Alan Halfen, UWP student body president, “He wants this to be an informal sit-down with students.” Feingold will speak for 30 minutes, then answer questions for another 30 minutes. He was scheduled to speak at UWP in November, however was forced to reschedule after a snowstorm.

Feingold is an avid supporter of campaign finance reform, passing the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002, which bans unlimited contributions to national party committees. He supports cutting government spending and decreasing the national debt. Feingold also leaves his mark on senate pay raises; refusing to accept them during his term in office and sending the extra money back to the U.S. Treasury.

He has sponsored an amendment to pass an increase in the maximum Pell Grant available to college students and sponsored the International Academic Opportunity Act, which provides scholarships for low-income students who are attending U.S. colleges or universities to study abroad. In addition, Feingold has sponsored legislation to crack down on scholarship fraud.

Feingold lives in Middleton with his wife, Mary, and four children.
