UWP adds chat room to answer questions

PLATTEVILLE - Advancement in information technology continues at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. A chat room has been added to benefit parents and students in answering any question that might arise, from already enrolled students to students looking at UWP as their choice of college. "This is another way UWP is showing students that they are working toward having higher technology on campus," said Kia Hendrickson, admissions advisor.

Hendrickson presented the possibility of adding a chat room after witnessing the program, piloted by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and the positive response they have recognized. Hendrickson's proposal was evaluated by admissions advisors, financial aid specialists, housing representatives, and athletic coaches, which will be the subjects for anyone with questions. Plans are being made to add guidance counselors to the chat room for transfer students, in addition to the juniors and seniors. The proposal was successfully considered for funding, and the first chat was held on Oct. 1 with six log-ons. The November chat rose to 18.

Monthly chat dates are strategically scheduled around athletic and other events, with the next date falling on Monday, Dec. 8 prior to the semester break. Shortly after the spring semester begins, the chat room is ready for a barrage of interest on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2004, and once a month thereafter - on Monday, Feb. 9; Monday, March 1; Tuesday, April 20; and the final date for the year is Wednesday, May 5.

All parents and students are encouraged to call between 7 and 9 p.m. on the dates listed above.
