Military Christmas party held at Park Inn
PLATTEVILLE - The Platteville community knows when to pull together and help those in need of any emotional and physical support, and that is exactly what happened last Sunday. Laura Koch, assistant administrator for Even Start at the University Wisconsin-Platteville, set in motion the efforts she and her elves put forth for the past six weeks, by giving a Christmas party to the families of loved ones who are in the service of protecting our country.
As a doorman in tails and top hats attended to all who approached the convention center, people were delighted at the beauty of Christmas that welcomed them once inside.
Fun programs included a drawing table, finger and face painting, and a storytelling time for children. Some activities brought special meaning to wives, husbands, or children as they entered Santa's Workshop to put together a gift to send to that loved one in the armed forces. The Platteville High School brass choir played special music and Santa Claus soon arrived on a fire-truck for all of the children to make their wish.
A delicious meal was set on colorful tables of green and red, with centerpieces and candles all about. Christmas trees, a winged-back armed-chair for Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and many ornaments enhanced the stage.
Many local businesses and individuals made donations to help this community effort reach fruition. Koch said, "I had no trouble finding volunteers; the positive response was truly encouraging. This is a difficult time for military families and this is a good way to show community support."
Attending the military Christmas party were members of a long-standing military family from Potosi. Cole and Cy Menne came with a friend, as their mother was at work and their father Sgt. Kevin Menne of the 229th was busy in Iraq. Cole, Cy and their 12-year-old twin brothers, saw their father on his two-week return visit at Thanksgiving time. Kevin served the United State of America in the Gulf War, too.
The Menne's are but one family that UWP extends thanks, appreciation and prayerful wishes to at this time of year and always, as they continue to serve the United States of America.
