Holiday Gala set for Dec. 6th and 7th

PLATTEVILLE- The holiday spirit will ring loud and clear as the University of Wisconsin-Platteville once again celebrates the coming of the holiday season with spectacular music and fantastic food at the Holiday Gala on Saturday, Dec. 6 and Sunday, Dec. 7.

The Holiday Gala is an annual banquet and concert sponsored by the UWP Fine Arts Department. Saturday's banquet will begin at 6 p.m. in the Ullsvik Center, with the concert following at 8 p.m. in the Brodbeck Concert Hall. Sunday's concert will begin at 4 p.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Groups will be performing all night, in the lobby, during the banquet and, of course, during the concert. "People don't realize how much fun the dinner is," says Dan Fairchild, UWP Fine Arts Chair, "the dinner is buffet style and as soon as the first person walks through the door, the music starts playing."

Several university and community groups will be performing during the banquet and the gala concert. Featured groups include: the Jazz Combo, University/Community Orchestra, Concert Choir, University Singers, Chamber Choir, Singing Pioneers, Coro D'Angeli, Platteville Chorale, Instrumental Ensembles and the Platteville Children's Choir. "We have a wonderful variety this year that we maybe haven't seen before, there will be surprises for everybody," Fairchild said.

The gala has two purposes; the first is to get the whole community in the holiday spirit and the second is to raise money for scholarships for music students either studying music at UWP or somehow participating in a musical group. One hundred percent of the profits go into the scholarship funds. This year the Fine Arts Department hopes to raise $10,000 to benefit the students.

Dinner/concert tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for UWP students and $12 for children under 13. Concert only tickets are $11 for adults, $6 for UWP students and $6 for children under 13. The entire amount of the concert only tickets may be deducted as a charitable contribution, while $7 of the adult dinner/concert ticket may be deducted and $4 of the children's ticket may be deducted. UWP students with a meal plan may also deduct the price of a meal from their dinner ticket cost.

According to Fairchild, "Part of what makes it so great is all the people coming together in the holiday spirit to have fun and help the most important people on campus-the students."

The deadline for reservations is Monday, Dec. 1, and can be made by contacting the Center for the Arts Box Office at (608) 342-1298
