EMS students design subdivision

PLATTEVILLE - Applying skills learned in the classroom to a hands-on project is just one experience that four students from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville will be gaining through their senior design class.

Each of the four students will be graduating this month with a degree in civil engineering. These students include Curt Czarnecki, originally from South Milwaukee, and Trigg Knerr, originally from North Prairie, each with an emphasis in transportation engineering. The other two students, Tory Miller, originally from Forestville, and Jeremy Bodul, originally from Milwaukee, each have an emphasis in construction engineering.

The four-member senior design team has spent the semester working on design plans for a subdivision layout on a portion of farmland located near Dickeyville. The team has been in contact with the landowners, Harvey and Mary Alice Muller, and their daughter, Michelle Muller, to determine the specifications of the project.

To begin the design and layout of the subdivision the team surveyed the land that was to be subdivided. KD Engineering Consultants from Dodgeville also surveyed the land and provided information for the team to use with their project.

In completing the project, the team was responsible for proving a cost estimate for the entire project, dividing the land into different phases for future development and designing an initial development of Phase I at the request of the family.

Throughout the work on the project, the team said they learned many valuable skills including designing a preliminary subdivision, communicating with clients and team members, researching statutes and regulations, and contacting the right people to obtain the necessary information.

The team agreed that this hands-on project was extremely beneficial and provided each of them the opportunity to tie together the skills learned in each of their classes to complete the project.

Throughout their project, the design team has been aided and advised by Dr. Bob Schmitt, professor in construction engineering.
