Hadfield to graduate with art education degree
PLATTEVILLE- "I believe that teaching is one if the most honored professions in the world," said Michael Hadfield, a Monticello native and UW-Platteville Fall 2003 graduate. "As an art teacher one of my goals is to spread the realm of creativity and critical thinking through the visual arts to students on many adaptive levels. These reasons attracted me to my future in education."
Hadfield, will graduate from UW-Platteville with an art education, K-12 certification with a middle-high school emphasis.
Hadfield plans to start a master of fine arts program within 2 years after graduation to further his education and understanding of the visual arts. After completing his student teaching position, he plans to substitute teach until he can acquire an art education position.
Hadfield began working for student housing in January 2001. Working at student housing through the summer of 2003, Hadfield had many opportunities and job positions. He worked as a resident assistant, a programming director and a summer camp and conference staff member. In addition, he worked at "Off the Wall," a publicity and creativity position stationed in the housing department. Hadfield also was a founding member of the UWP Art Club and served as president for one and a half terms.
"I learned a lot from my experiences and feel that I would't have the drive or communication tools today if not for that adapted knowledge," said Hadfield.
He enjoys scuba diving, skiing and frisbee golf in addition to the many aspects and mediums of art: drawing, printmaking, pottery and glasswork.
"There are many people who helped to contribute, support and guide me throughout my college experience. My parents supported a lot of my efforts. I would not be the educator I am today without the help of my cooperating teachers and university supervisor."
Hadfield offered advice to underclassmen or those considering attending UWP.
"I would suggest sticking around some weekends and truly seeing what is available to you. Take the time and energy to join a worthwhile club or organization and help build upon what they have started," suggested Hadfield.
"I am happy with my experiences, the classes that I have taken, and overall, feel quite grateful to have the opportunities that I had at UWP. Platteville is a great school, the classes are adequately sized, professors are excited to teach the material at hand and there are many activities out there to attend or become involved with if you are willing to look."
