PLATTEVILLE - Six students enrolled in the senior design class at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville will be working with Innovative Concept Engineering Inc. to design 120 acres of land, previously used for agricultural purposes, into residential development for subdivisions.
The 120 acres to be developed for residential planning is part of the Harlo Scott Property Development Design Project, which consists of 880 acres total. The property is owned by Mr. Harlo Scott and is located outside of Lancaster in the township of Ellenboro.
The six students working on the project are each majoring in civil engineering with an emphasis in construction and transportation engineering and will be graduating in December. These students include Aaron Gonet, originally from Carol Stream, Ill.; Joshua Dupee, originally from Mazomanie; Al Rinka, originally from Loyal; Chad Novak, originally from Francis Creek; Gretchen Rear, originally from New Glarus; and Eric Mueller, originally from Cuba City.
Thus far, the design team has carried out many steps towards completing their project of preparing the land for residential development. The team has performed a topographic and boundary survey of the 120 acres, conducted two client meetings with Scott, created construction plans and a preliminary layout of the subdivision, determined the size of each residential lot and completed roadwork design. In addition to these steps, the team will also be considering stormwater and wastewater management for the developed zone.
According to the team, the next process in completing the project will be to create a cost estimate of the entire plan and develop a proposal that describes the project in detail and presents the information gathered.
The team agrees that the classes they have completed at UWP have helped shape their way of thinking and their outlook in approaching the project. Gonet commented that this project has offered him insight into land development work and excellent hands on experience that will be beneficial in the workforce following his graduation.
Aiding and advising the students throughout the project has been Dr. Sam Owusu-Ababio, professor in transportation engineering.
