Basketball champ to speak about diversity
Nevil Shed, a member of the Texas Western College National Championship Basketball Team in 1965-66, will address topics in diversity at UW-Platteville.
Shed will speak to UWP students on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. in the University Room of the Pioneer Student Center. Shed is also scheduled to address students at the Platteville Middle School Monday, Oct. 20 and UWP athletes that evening.
"The championship marked the first time in the history of an intercollegiate championship game that the starting line-up was all black," said Carlos Wiley, director of Multicultural Services at UWP.
The team from 1965 is the only one to ever win a national championship in basketball from Texas. Texas Western College has since changed titles to the University of Texas-El Paso.
"Students should attend to get a better understanding of the experiences of someone going through the process of integrating schools as it has only been 40 years since we have all been able to attend schools together," said Wiley. "Shed will express and share his experiences and what it was like during his championship and time period."
