PLATTEVILLE-As a holiday initiative, the student members of the American Society of Safety Engineers made a financial donation to the Platteville Fire Department. The donation will be used to purchase 10 smoke detectors for Platteville residents. In the event of a fire, it is the hope of the student members that the smoke detectors would alert individuals in the household and allow them enough time to safely exit the house, thus, assisting to prevent loss of life.

The detectors will be forwarded from the Platteville Fired Department to Cindy Martens, holiday project chair; who will place them in holiday baskets. The baskets will be distributed to less fortunate Platteville residents who do not currently have detectors nor have an adequate number of detectors in their homes. The American Society of Safety Engineers Student Section is advised by UWP Occupational Safety Management professors Dick Klawiter and Lyn Bouck, located in the Department of Industrial Studies.
