Jazz I is the flagship ensemble for the UW-Platteville jazz department. The group has been in existence since 1965 and is composed of music and non-music majors. Jazz I has performed with such noted artists as Marvin Stamm, Clark Terry, Ed Soph, Chester Thompson, Ted Curson, Scott Colley, Cecil Bridgewater, David Berkman, John Carlson, Donny McCaslin, Phil Mattson, Edward Simon, David Binney, Kim Richmond, Bob Mintzer, Dave Pietro, Curt Moore, Louie Romero, and Greg Abate. Recent visits of major jazz artists include the Matt Wilson Quartet, Avashai Cohen, Terrence Blanchard, Marcus Roberts. Jazz I is active on and off campus, touring Wisconsin and the tri-state region.
Opportunities are abundant for jazz studies at UW-Platteville. In addition to Jazz I the department offers the Pioneer Jazz Orchestra, the repertory big band and four combos serving as classes for the study of jazz improvisation and styles. The courses, Jazz Improvisation and Theory, The History of Jazz and Jazz Techniques round out the students’ further exploration of jazz studies at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
