JOURNALISM

Journalism has changed radically in the early 21st century, but there will always be a need for the journalist who pursues the best obtainable version of the truth and tells a compelling story. Students in the journalism emphasis understand the need for fair, accurate reporting coupled with the ability to tell the story in print, video, and social media. Graduates of the program enjoy careers in editing, reporting, publishing, advertising, public relations, and more. In the journalism emphasis, you will be required to complete an internship and encouraged to participate in the Exponent, our campus newspaper, which is open to all majors. More info...

The photography and web development emphasis is oriented toward the professional development of photographers and web designers. This 21-credit emphasis offers an education that blends media design strategies, aesthetics, and cultures with digital technologies to effectively deliver engaging multimedia content in the global economy. PUBLIC RELATIONS

The impact of public relations on contemporary media continues to grow and evolve. Public relations emphasis students study the history and theoretical underpinnings of the field, while gaining practical experience in how to put that knowledge to use across multiple platforms ranging from print to video to social media. Graduates of the program develop skills in meeting and event planning, public relations management, association management, crisis management, and more. The curriculum, a required internship, and related extracurricular activities will ensure that you are ready for the challenges the workplace might present to you as a public relations practitioner. VIDEO AND AUDIO PRODUCTION

Our program offers a 21st century education that will help you establish a career in the field of modern media production. Video and audio production will give you access to cutting edge equipment and editing facilities. Our students produce outstanding work as they continue to win numerous state, regional, and national production awards. As one of our students, you will be prepared to think critically, act creatively, and practice ethically in a modern society. Beyond the classroom, you will gain valuable experience through student media, such as WSUP and TV-5, and a required internship.With these fundamental skills set and knowledge, you will be prepared to enter any industry that utilizes communication through professional media production. Social Media Minor

The social media minor is the first academic program of its kind in the University of Wisconsin System and "one of the first in the country." The program emphasizes "cyber literacy" and the use of social media in a variety of professional settings. More info...
