Majoring in Mathematics
Students majoring in Mathematics at UW-Platteville must take a set of
core required courses, as well as other courses selected with regard
to career goals.
- Mathematics majors who plan to work in business or industry after graduation choose their electives from applied mathematics courses such as differential equations, numerical analysis, probability, and statistics.
- Mathematics majors who plan to pursue graduate work in mathematics select courses from each of the following areas of mathematics: algebra, analysis, and geometry.
- Mathematics majors planning to work toward an advanced degree in statistics include junior-senior level probability and statistics courses among their mathematics electives.
- Mathematics majors who plan to teach in secondary/middle schools select courses designed for teacher preparation.
Employment Opportunities
Among the companies with which UW-Platteville mathematics majors are
pursuing include State Farm Insurance, IBM, Employers Insurance,
Texas Instruments, Bell Laboratories, and Hughes Aircraft.
Graduate Training
Some of our graduates choose to further pursue graduate-level training
in mathematics or statistics. Although we currently do not have our own
graduate programs, our mathematics-major program provides students with
solid foundation so that they will be successful in attaining advanced
degrees, such as Masters and Doctorates, at other institutions.
