Two Types of Article Indexes

To determine if you need a subject article indexA list of topics referring to a document; can be found in electronic or print formats, consider the following questions:

  •  Is your topic in a particular subject area?
  •  Do you need sources that are more scholarly?
  •  Are you going more in-depth on a topic?
If so, start with one of the subject article indexes.

Subject Indexes

Subject indexes specialize in a particular subject, and the articles indexed are generally from scholarly sources. Examples of subject indexes and the kinds of articles they identify are:

ABI/Inform
ABI/Inform Global, a ProQuest database, indexes articles for almost 3000 business-related journals. Most are available in full text.
Applied Science
Applied Science Full Text, a Wilson Web database, indexes and abstracts for over 400 science and technology journals. Some are available in full text.
PsycINFO
PyscINFO, an EBSCOhost database, has abstracts for over 1300 psychology journals. Includes some full text.
