Internationalizing UWP: The Library's Role

The UWP community has a goal of providing 25 % of the students some kind of international experience. During the day-long workshop sponsored by the Teaching Excellence Center "Act Globally, Teach Locally" which took place on January 15, guest speaker Dr. Gisela Hoecherl-Alden reported, "When encouraging students to study abroad, the role of the library is absolutely essential. The library is the first place students feel comfortable to go to do research in that first week of thinking about studying abroad." Hoecherl-Alden, traveled here from the University of Maine where she is Assistant Professor of German and Director of New England Universities in Salzburg Study Abroad Program.

The Karrmann Library is indeed on board, serving as an invaluable resource for students as they explore attaining an international experience.

All this is in keeping with the library's slogan:

Karrmann Library - Your Passport to the World!

Access the catalog by clicking on "Library Catalog" from the library's homepage. Log in with the 16-digit number found on your university I.D. card. Customize your searching by clicking three new gold buttons found at the top of the web page.

"My Preferences" allows you to set a search method as a default for that particular session (such as, Simple Search-Author).

"My Saved Searches" allows you to save search strategies so that you can easily re-execute them later.

"My Bookbag" allows you to select and keep certain titles in a file, just like dropping a book into your personal bookbag.

Universal Borrowing (UB), the sharing of books throughout the UW system, now offers access to the titles in UW-Madison's libraries. If while searching Karrmann Library's "Library Catalog" you determine that a book is not available here, initiate a UB request by clicking the orange "Other Catalogs" button, select libraries to search, re-execute the search, then click the orange UB button. Most UB requests are filled within 2-3 business days.

ILLiad - New Interlibrary Loan Service

Top

Up and running is ILLiad, a new interlibrary loan system!

Click "UWP Students, Faculty, and Staff". Those possessing a UWP I.D. card may remotely request materials not available in the Karrmann Library through ILLiad and interlibrary loan. Undergraduate student requests are filled by Wisconsin libraries; however, faculty and graduate students may request materials available from out-of-state libraries. Users will need to know their 16-digit Pioneer Passport (I.D.) numbers in order to log in and place requests for books (monographs) and journal articles.

Journal articles will still be delivered electronically, but will be available only through the ILLiad web pages and through the requester's UWP Web E-Mail account. Questions? Please contact the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) staff at 608-342-1648.
