RefWorks logo

RefWorks assists in the process of building bibliographies and parenthetical references, but nothing replaces understanding how to create a citation or bibliography, nor does anything replace using the style manuals which answer questions and give examples.

Definitions:
Reference =
a basic citation to a book or journal article
Output style =
citation style such as MLA or APA styles

HOW TO GET TO REFWORKS

Access RefWorks, a guide and a tutorial.

First-time users need to create an account with your own username and password.

WHAT REFWORKS DOES

  1. Allows you to gather references into a personal searchable database
  2. Helps you manipulate that database, as in filing references in folders
  3. Assists in getting those references back out, as in building a bibliography

Please note that you must not have pop-up pages blocked in your browser.

GETTING REFERENCES INTO YOUR PERSONAL DATABASE

6 ways

For help with all six of these ways, click Help on the RefWorks toolbar, Help again, then Getting References into Your Account.

  1. Importing from Online Data Vendors (such as EBSCOhost)
(Each database has its own instructions/steps.)

Access to library subscription databases: From the library homepage, click Articles, Full Text and more. Click database title and perform a search. If a pathway to importing the journal article references is not easily determined, visit RefWorks help pages for more help.

Login to RefWorks, click Help on the toolbar and click Help again.
From the list of help topics on the left click Getting References into Your Account
then Importing from Online Data Vendors.

  2. Converting from Other Bibliographic Management Programs (such as EndNote)
  3. Capturing Web Page Data with RefGrab-It

RefGrab-It is an optional feature for capturing bibliographic info from web pages. It is available either as a bookmarklet or a plug-in that works with Internet Explorer or Firefox. RefGrab-It cannot be used on pdf files from websites. Click "Tools" for download information.

  4. Retrieving Information from RSS Feeds (Really Simple Syndication feeds)
  5. Importing References (typically book records) from UWP’s Library Catalog

In RefWorks click Search on the toolbar and Online Catalog or Database. If it’s not the default, click the arrow for a drop down list of databases, select UW-Platteville, and do a search. Note: These records will open in a new browser window and are not in your RefWorks account until you select them and click Import.

  6. Manually Adding References

On the toolbar, mouse over References and then Add New Reference
Select an output or citation style, such as MLA or APA
Under Reference Type, designate the type (journal article or book)
    Click Save when finished
