This guide offers tips on how to find materials on photography by using the Karrmann Library Catalog, plus our electronic and print resources.

General Photography & Background Information

The Dictionary of Art (Grove's, 34 vols.) Ref N31 .D5 1996

Photography Works & Collections

Photography works and collections are not necessarily shelved in one specific place or call number in the library, because the photography in these works is more often the medium rather than the subject. For example, Karen Ingham's photo collection Anatomy Lessons, QM25 .I54 2004, is shelved in the anatomy section, rather than in the photography section (see common call numbers below).

Library Catalog Search Tips:

So how do you find a photo collection on a particular subject?

First, try starting with an index, like Photography Books Index III, Ref TR199 .M67 2006, an extensive and easy-to-use subject guide to photo anthologies. Then, check the Library Catalog to see if we own any of the titles - if not, you can still get them through UB (Universal Borrowing) or ILL (Interlibrary Loan).

Second, search the Library Catalog by using a Boolean search to find photography collections on certain topics.

"Pictorial Works" (also sometimes listed for illustration collections and mixed media) and photography are two of the most common terms used in cataloging photography collections.

Examples:

A Boolean search for "United States" AND "pictorial works" retrieves Mitch Epstein's Recreation: American Photographs, 1973-1988, Oversize Collection GV181.15 .E6 2005.

A Boolean search for "popular culture" AND photography retrieves Lauren Greenfield's Girl Culture, TR681 .G5 G74 2002.
