DEFINITION OF A PERIODICAL

Periodicals are publications which usually are issued daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or semi-annually. They include newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals, indexes and abstracts.

PERIODICAL LIST

All periodicals held by the library are listed alphabetically in the Periodical List. The list, available in paper format, includes the title of the periodical, location (if other than first floor), the holdings, and the format (unbound, bound, microfilm, microfiche, electronic).

PERIODICALS BY SUBJECT

Selected copies of the Periodical List include a Subject Section which lists all periodical titles and holdings by discipline. The Subject Section is preceded by a Subject Index indicating subjects used in that section.

LOCATION

The majority of periodicals are located on the First Floor. Exceptions are noted in the Periodical List.

FORMAT

Periodical issues remain unbound unless considered to have more permanent value and then are either bound into book form or obtained on microform. Periodical titles are bound at the end of a numbered volume or whenever there are enough issues to make a physical volume. Microforms are received two to twelve months after the completion of the publisher's numbered volume.

ARRANGEMENT

Periodicals are arranged alphabetically by title with bound and unbound issues in one section and microform issues in the microform cabinets. There are three sets of microform cabinets: one for journals on microfilm, one for newspapers on microfilm, and one for journals on microfiche.

PERIODICAL CIRCULATION

Periodicals do not circulate; however, the library has two self-service photocopy machines and three microform printers that produce paper copies for a small fee.

PERIODICALS/INTERLIBRARY LOAN DESK

Located on the First Floor, the Periodical/Interlibrary Loan Desk is always staffed to help patrons locate periodicals and to use the equipment.
