Who may Check Out Library Materials

Any university faculty, staff or student with a university ID card may check out library materials. Area residents, with a special borrower's card, may also check out materials.

University ID Card

Students are automatically issued an ID card, called a Pioneer Passport, when they register. Faculty and staff may obtain an ID card by contacting the Pioneer Passport Office located in the Pioneer Student Center near the Information Desk, 608-342-1449.

Special Borrower's Card

Area residents, may obtain a special borrower's card at the Circulation Desk on the main floor of the library by filling out an application and presenting one form of photo identification. A special borrower's card is good for two years from the date of issue and then must be renewed. InterLibrary loan services are not available to Special Borrowers.

Library Loan Periods

Most circulating materials can be checked out for 28 days. Faculty and staff can check out most materials for one semester or summer period. Some items have shorter loan periods; for more information please contact the Circulation Desk.

Renewal Periods

Most materials, if not requested by someone else, may be renewed once. Renewals can be done in person with your Pioneer Passport, over the telephone, through the mail, or by accessing your personal circulation record (see bottom of page).

Overdue or Lost Materials

Karrmann Library does not charge fines for overdue materials. However, once an item becomes overdue for thirty (30) days, the borrower will be billed for the replacement costs. At that point, library privileges are suspended until the record is cleared. Charges are removed and privileges restored once the item is returned or the bill is paid. Students will have a hold put on their student records for unpaid bills. Other patrons are subject to collection procedures.

Hold/Recall

If a title you need is checked out ("Checked Out" or Due" is displayed on the Library's Catalog), access your personal circulation record to have a Hold/Recall placed on the item. Contact the Circulation Desk if you have any questions.

The person who has the material will be sent a recall notice requesting that the item be returned. Once the item is returned, you will be notified that it is available at the Circulation Desk or by checking your personal circulation record.

Note: Unless an item is needed for reserve, a recall will not be sent until the original borrower has had the material for at least 14 days.

Item Missing from the Shelf

If you are unable to locate an item on the shelf, please report the problem to the Circulation Desk. You may also ask to have a HOLD placed on the title.

You will be notified when the material is located. In the meantime, you may request the title through InterLibrary Loan or Universal Borrowing. (Ask at the Circulation Desk or the Reference Desk for assistance with obtaining materials through interlibrary loan.)
