Any university faculty, staff or student with a university ID (Pioneer Passport) card may check out library materials. Area residents, with a special borrower's card, may also check out materials.
Area residents and guests may request a special borrower’s card at the Circulation Desk on the main floor of Karrmann Library. Library staff will mail out the application form. When completed the form, along with a current photo identification card must be presented, in person at the same desk. At that time a special borrower’s card will be issued, the borrower information will be entered into the library system, and up to five items may be checked out. A special borrower’s card is good for two years from the date of issue. According to statewide agreement InterLibrary loan services are available from the special borrower’s public library, not Karrmann Library.
Most circulating materials circulate for 28 days. Some items have shorter loan periods or are non-circulating.
Most materials, if not needed by someone else, may be renewed. Renewals can be done in person with your Pioneer Passport, over the telephone by calling 608-342-1679, or by accessing your personal circulation record, My Account in the library catalog (url:http://pltlib.wisconsin.edu/vwebv/searchBasic.
Karrmann Library charges fines for all overdue materials. Once an item becomes thirty days overdue, the borrower will be billed for the replacement cost of the material plus a non refundable processing fee. Two overdue items, two lost items or a total of fines and fees that exceed $210.00 will block all library privileges. Blocks will remain until the record is cleared. Failure to return materials and/or pay fines and fees may result in blocked transcripts or other collection procedures.
If a title you need is checked out ("Checked Out" or Due" is displayed on the Library's Catalog), access your personal circulation record to have a Hold/Recall placed on the item. Contact the Circulation Desk if you have any questions.
The person who has the material will be sent a recall notice requesting that the item be returned. Once the item is returned, you will be notified that it is available at the Circulation Desk or by checking your personal circulation record.
Note: Unless an item is needed for reserve, a recall will not be sent until the original borrower has had the material for at least 14 days.
If you are unable to locate an item on the shelf, please report the problem to the Circulation Desk. You may also ask to have a HOLD placed on the title.
You will be notified when the material is located. In the meantime, you may request the title through InterLibrary Loan or Universal Borrowing. (Ask at the Circulation Desk or the Reference Desk for assistance with obtaining materials through these services.)
For any questions about checking out items, please contact the Circulation Desk at 608-342-1679
