ALERT 01.20.17 - Phishing scam targets students with job offer
The following phishing scam notice comes from the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) on January 19, 2017.
The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has issued an alert on employment scams targeting college students. Phony job opportunities are advertised via college employment websites or students’ university emails. Unfortunately, students who take the bait suffer financial losses.

While this scam has not been reported on our campus yet, the threat is real. Always maintain a healthy sense of paranoia about emails offering money, rewards, or easy opportunities.

Students: If you have received an email with Subject: Form 1098T 2016 from UW PLATTEVILLE Available, IMPORTANT TAX RETURN DOCUMENT AVAILABLE from email@example.com, fear not. This message is legitimate!
Whenever you receive an unexpected message from an individual or organization, it is a good idea to go directly to the alleged source to verify whether the message is legitimate. If you still have questions about this email or the process described within it, you may contact the Cashiers Office (called a Bursar's office on some campuses) at 608.342.1211 or firstname.lastname@example.org.

Here you have access to your campus e-mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks as well as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Online, Skype for Business Online (formerly Lync), and OneDrive (storage - like your J-drive). To access your Office 365 account, click the orange E-mail Login button at the right.
Set the correct time zone: (UTC-06:00) Central Time (US & Canada)
Setting the time zone must be done through the Outlook Web App. For full instructions on confirming or changing your Office 365 time zone, please refer to Office 365 - Changing Time Zone in the ITS Knowledge Base. Don't get caught in the phishing net!
Pioneers should remember that ITS will NEVER ask for your password in an email - or through a link from an email. Never, ever. SERIOUSLY.
- If you receive such an email, please DELETE immediately.
- If you clicked on the link and logged in, CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IMMEDIATELY.

All e-mail and calendar invitations sent from university departments and personnel will go to this official account. If you choose to forward your Office 365 account to another provider, add the domain uwplatt.edu to that provider's trusted list to ensure you receive all important university communications.
